Raster & Vector Design
Raster and vector design are the most viewed design styles seen by the mainstream public. The number of areas of design related to raster and vector and virtually infinate. Vector designs are depicted within any page layout project, as well as cartooning and corporate branding.
Raster design can be used for photo manipulation and correction. Photos can be manipulated to convey a specific emotion or feeling and touched up to enhanced an individual's appearance. Raster imaging can also be used for low-quality cartooning or chararcter design, however, its not advisable to cartoon using raster imaging.
The projects depicted in this portfolio focus primarily on page layout and corporate branding using vector design and photo manipulation using raster imaging techniques.
Image Composition
The goal of the Composite Image was to take a minimum of three existing photographs, cut them apart, and put them back together to create an entirely new photograph. In choosing the images and developing an idea of what I wanted to create I had to keep into consideration the resolution of each image as the new composite had to be an 8x10 photo at 200 dpi as well as lighting in each image, shading, color matching, and image sharpness.
For the composite image, I chose to take a Mini Cooper Type S and combine it with parts from a Ski-doo snowmobile to create a machine that would run not only in the snow but on the beach as the Mini is perceived more as a summertime car, therefore what better place for a summertime car than the beaches of sunny southern California.
I wanted the car to remain primarily stock looking, but yet have some custom work done to the paint and accessories. I gave the car a new rear end setup using aftermarket parts and customized some of the body components just by giving them a sleek flat black finish.
Image Correction & Retouching
Everybody has images they would like to keep and cherish for the remainder of their lifetime. However, due to one reason or another, those cherished photographs get beat up as they sit around and get passed around between family and friends. This photo is a prime example. My goal was to take this worn out, torn photograph with writing pressed through and transform it into an image that looks like it was just taken yesterday.
The majority of this image was edited using the clone tool in Photoshop but some copy and paste was needed to correct a few areas the healing brush and clone tool was not able to get to. Due to the efforts put forth using these tools the image has been restored to its original condition as if it was just taken and uploaded yesterday.
Vector Page Layout - Product Brochure
This brochure was created for a gentleman who sells custom designed parts to go kart racers part time. He had an existing product brochure that he had designed himself that just showed a few pictures and gave a few descriptions of the products he offered. He came to me and asked if I could give his brochure a new, updated look.
I wanted to give him a rather industrial design along with a lot of high contrast accents to make his products really stand out while still keeping a layout similar to the existing one to make sure the customers recognized who the dealer was.
Vector Page Layout - Concert Poster
The goal of this poster was to find an accomplished illustrator's style and create a concert poster using that style. The poster had to be for a band or solo artist that had been on tour and the style used to create the poster had to immitate the chosen artist. My chosen artist for this piece was Tamaye Perry.
The style was to make the piece be very busy and in many pieces, they use a silhouette style for the band members or other elements. I chose to incorporate the silhouettes by taking a photograph of the band and using it to retrieve a simple sketch of their faces.
I also took elements the band uses on many of its merchandise, including the stars and lightning bolts. I used different sizes of those elements to create movement on the page. I incorportated the bands logo at the top as well as their cherry mascot to add familiarity. The style of music is southern rock so the older truck was also incorportated into the poster and is also used on some of the band's merchandise.
